Geelong has unveiled a new captain for its VFLW side, with young defender Chloe Leonard set to lead the side into 2023.

The former Greater Western Victoria Rebels captain was vice-captain last season, and will step up into the top role this season after being voted in by teammates and coaches.

Now in her third season with the VFLW Cats, Leonard has quickly established herself as a leader in the program.

“Chloe has already proven to be a fantastic leader in her time at Geelong, and we’re thrilled to see her get the opportunity to lead our group in 2023,” Geelong VFLW Coach Elise Coventry said.

“Her composure on the field and the way she gets around the group and rallies them is a really wonderful asset for our program.

“We have a young list and Chloe has shown over the pre-season what an excellent leader she can be, consolidating what we saw of her last season as vice-captain.”

Last year’s captain Bree Beckley will remain in the leadership group, but will step down her duties as she balances her own playing career with her new role as Geelong Falcons Talent Operations Lead.

Sachi DeGiacomi and recruits Poppy Schaap and Abby Favell round out the leadership group.

DeGiacomi is a former Falcon and has been with Geelong’s VFLW program since graduating from the underage talent pathway.

Schaap, another former Falcon, joins the Cats after two seasons with Carlton in the AFLW, while Favell will become a Cat after a season with Hawthorn follo her time at Murray Bushrangers.

“We have a really well-rounded leadership group this season, with a mix of footballing experiences,” Coventry said.

“They all bring such great qualities to our squad, and set a magnificent standard in games and at training.

“Bree has been a brilliant leader for our team, and we’re happy she is in a position to continue in our leadership group as she embarks on an exciting new chapter of her career.

“Sachi has emerged as a dedicated and passionate member of the team, with a desire to bring the group together, while Poppy returns to us with a strong knowledge of the game and leadership qualities she is openly passionate to explore.

“Abby is new to our program this year. She is a talented player who sets a fantastic standard and will lead strongly by example.”

The Cats’ VFLW season begins this Saturday, March 25, when they take on North Melbourne at Deakin University Elite Sports Precinct.
