VICTORIAN fans taking public transport to games this year will face delays and should allow extra travel time.

Upgrades are taking place on several metropolitan and regional train lines, with commuters to have the option of taking replacement buses.

The majority of this round of upgrades will finish by the end of round five, but there are likely to be other works throughout the rest of the season.

Public transport users are recommended to check the news and events page of the Public Transport Victoria website and plan ahead to ensure they make it to matches on time.

The free tram zone has also been extended to help fans get to the MCG and will include Stop 11 Jolimont Station on Routes 48 and 75 on AFL match days between Saturday, April 6 and Tuesday, April 23.

"We encourage footy fans to check if their line is affected by any works and allow extra travel time if the match they are attending is impacted," PTV CEO Jeroen Weimar said.

"Replacement buses will be provided to ensure everyone can get to and from matches and we will have extra staff on the ground to help passengers know where to go."
