A trio of Geelong midfield stars are in the running for the AFL Players' Association AFLW MVP Award, which will be announced on Wednesday.

Amy McDonald, Georgie Prespakis and Nina Morrison have all been named as the Cats in contention, following initial voting by clubs.

Voting for the AFLPA awards is a two-step process: first, players nominate a teammate for the awards, with the results forming the shortlist revealed today.

Then, voting is opened up to players across the whole competition to vote for the overall winners of each award, with players unable to vote for a player from their own club.

McDonald, who has won Geelong's past two Best and Fairest awards, had another brilliant season in the midfield, leading the competition for contested possessions and finishing the season with a remarkable 24.8 disposals, 7.4 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game as she once again showed her hunger to win the ball for the Cats.

Prespakis' meteoric rise continued, with the 19-year-old proving a dynamic force in the Cats' midfield, averaging 21.8 disposals, 7.2 tackles and 5.7 clearances a game in just her second season of AFLW.

Morrison was another Cat who went from strength to strength, building off her triumphant return in Season 6 to average 16.1 disposals, 5.7 tackles and 2.1 clearances a game, playing through the wing, midfield and up forward.

Brooke Plummer is the Cats' nomination for Best First Year Player after an impressive debut season, playing four games on the wing. Plummer's elite kick and ability to run and carry are highlights of her game, and the future looks promising for the talented 18-year-old.

After making her way back from a foot fracture to play every game in Season 7, Annabel Johnson is the Cats' nomination for Most Courageous Player. Johnson's intercepting game was brilliant this season, and her willingness to go back with the flight to take a mark more proof of her courage on the field.

Meghan McDonald is the Cats' nomination for Best Captain. The brilliant defender again led her team superbly in Season 7, with her courage and determination on the field also setting a great example for her teammates.

Award winners will be announced at the AFL Players’ Association MVP Awards on Wednesday.
