Geelong has selected defender Abbey McDonald with its third and final selection in the 2022 NAB AFL Women’s Draft, taken with the 55th pick overall.

Small but exceedingly versatile, McDonald has found a home down back this season for the Calder Cannons but her competitiveness and football IQ means she can be deployed in a variety of roles across the ground as she has done across her junior career.

Geelong Head of AFLW, Football Pathways and Player Development Brett Johnson said the club loved the way she plays and are pleased she was still available at pick 56.

"Abbey is just a real competitor," he told geelongcats.com.au.

"We love the way she plays. She defends first and is able to work off her opponent, and contributes to our attack."
