The Cats were feeling generous on Sunday, dealing out a Father's Day present to all Cats fans at the GABBA. Thanks to Deakin here is what we learnt.

Low key Wolf Pack getting it done

The beauty of the Cats line-up this year is that there is not one line in the side that get’s touted as “the best in the AFL” externally. Other backlines are touted for their defensive stars but the Cats having the second most miserly defence in the AFL. The midfielders find more of the football than any other side in the competition and have the equal most clearances in the competition, but many media pundits wouldn’t have them in their top 5 midfields. And finally, the forwards; they have scored more points than any other side as well as its members topping goal, score involvements and goal assists. Again though, not many are in raptures about the forward line as they are about others. In a showing of how quickly they can flick the switch, the Cats became the first side this year to register six goals in a quarter twice in the one match.

You Bewdy

Statistically, yesterday was Jed Bews best game in his 97 game career. He had career highs for Supercoach points, marks and goals in a performance that showed his attacking flair. This switch to a more attacking mindset, combined with an increased use of Bews by his teammates has seen the Cat average a career high for rebounds from 50 this year. However, none of Bews’ renowned shut down ability has disappeared meaning he provides a fantastic two-way threat down back.

Mene-WOAH-a

Another player who had statistically one of their greatest games yet was Sam Menegola. After a quieter than usual outing against the Bulldogs last week, Menegola put in one of the season’s best performances by any player. His 30 disposals, eight clearances, five inside 50s and two goals was as dominant as any wingman could hope for. Those numbers included career high’s for clearances and also Supercoach points. Menegola currently sits in the top 20 in the AFL for disposals, kicks, handballs, uncontested possessions, meters gained and marks and should be a name front and centre for All Australian nominations.

Blitz Gabba Goals

The Cats would have welcomed the news that this year’s home finals would be based in Queensland and specifically at the GABBA. Since 2006, the Cats have won 10 of a possible 13 games at the Lions home ground and one player in particular has appreciated the ground. Mark Blicavs booted two goals on Sunday afternoon, including a beauty from outside 50 on his left, meaning he averages nearly a goal a game at the GABBA. Perhaps owing to the smaller ground dimensions, Blicavs finds it easier to make his way from defence to the forward line to become an attacking option. It provides the Cats with another ace up their sleeve heading into finals.
