Brandan Parfitt evades Zach Guthrie at training on Tuesday morning.

Geelong will be chasing their first win of the season when they host the Hawks at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night.

The Cats have got almost an entire to list to choose from with only three players unavailable according to Coach Chris Scott.

With the competition for spots set to be fierce, we take a look at some of the leading contenders fighting for a recall after missing out on Round 1 team selection.

Brandan Parfitt

A near certainty to be named this week after coach Chris Scott said "we will get Brandan Parfitt back" during Tuesday morning's press conference.

Parfitt's elite balance between contested footy, a bit of space and the ability to hold a formation should bring a better balance to Geelong's on-ball brigade against the Hawks.

Rhys Stanley

Hasn't missed a beat during the shutdown period and looks set to fight it out with Darcy Fort for the number one ruck mantle.

Jack Steven

Chris Scott left the door slightly ajar for the return of Jack Steven

"If he gets through the session then we're still open-minded, but if he has some issues then it probably rules him out. I'm very confident he'll get through the session really well and put his hand up to play," Scott said.

"It's just a matter of whether we push a button on it. I think if we don't play him we're being conservative, but that's OK."

Jake Kolodjashnij

One of the most consistent performers in a superb defensive unit, Kolodjashnij has been one of the biggest benefactors of the covid shutdown period after a hip injury saw him miss Round 1.

However, the Cats are set to take a conservative approach with the versatile backman.

"He could play, but I think we will give him another week or so."

Jed Bews

A super reliable small defender who can shutdown the very best small forwards in the game. Has to come into the coaches' thinking with the likes of Luke Breust and Chad Wingard set to lineup for the opposition on Friday night.

Others

Sam Simpson was named an emergency for Round 1 and doesn't appear far off from getting a senior opportunity. Cooper Stephens has impressed in his first season to date, while James Parsons and Charlie Constable are others in the mix.

The clash will be superstar midfielder Patrick Dangerfield's 250th game of his stellar career.
