With the AFL fixture released, fans will likely be circling the games they can and can’t get to, but there’s at least four that no one will want to miss with up to five players set to mark significant milestones next season, and almost all of them could be at GMHBA Stadium.
Patrick Dangerfield 250
Round 2, Gold Coast, GMHBA Stadium,
The Cats’ early season fixture has all the club’s ‘big three’ celebrating significant milestones, potentially beginning with Patrick Dangerfield’s 250th against the Suns in Round 2.
It’ll also be his 96th game in Cats colours since crossing from the Crows back in 2016, which means he’ll play his 100th game for the club against the Dockers in Round 6. If you’re into that sort of thing.
Joel Selwood 300, Gary Ablett 350
Round 5, St.Kilda, GMHBA Stadium
The Cats’ early season clash with the Saints at Kardinia Park could be one for the ages, with club legends Selwood and Ablett set to mark the 300 and 350 game milestones respectively.
Selwood would be the just for the fifth player in history to tally 300 games in the hoops, joining Corey Enright (332), Ian Nankervis (325), Jimmy Bartel (305) and Sam Newman (300).
It might also be Jack Steven’s first game against his old club.
A wild celebration for the fans but probably a nightmare for the banner writers.
Jake Koldojashnij 100
Round 7, Brisbane Lions, GMHBA Stadium
Kola didn’t miss a game in 2018 and played all but two for the Cats last season, so on that form line he’ll be looking to suit up for game 100 against the Lions in Round 7 at GMHBA Stadium.
The Launceston product's previous two milestone games against Melbourne (debut) and West Coast (50) both resulted in losses by 24 and 15 points respectively, so he’ll be keen to be carried off to a different tune this year.
Jed Bews 100
Round 18, Collingwood, MCG
Of all the potential milestone games this year, Jed’s is the only one not tentatively scheduled at home - although a blockbuster Friday night clash against the Pies at the MCG is probably the next best thing.
It’s a long year so pencilling this one in so deep into the season is probably fraught with danger but give or take a few he might still run through the banner at home with the Cats’ following three games all at GMHBA Stadium against the Demons, Dogs and Giants respectively.
