Geelong Cats are excited to welcome James Worpel to the Club, with the midfielder signing a four-year deal from 2026.
The Cats made an offer to Worpel on Friday morning as a restricted free agent, with the Hawks electing not to match Geelong’s free agency offer.
Originally from Bell Park in Geelong, Worpel returns home having played 148 games for the Hawks across eight seasons, including winning the Peter Crimmins Medal for Hawthorn's Best and Fairest in 2019.
A tough inside midfielder renowned for his attack on the contest, in 2025 Worpel averaged 20.1 disposals, five tackles and 4.8 clearances in 21 games.
Geelong Cats Executive General Manager - Football, Andrew Mackie, said the Club was thrilled to welcome Worpel to the Cats.
“We’re really pleased to welcome James to the Cats. James is a quality person and player who we believe will complement our current playing group. We’re looking forward to seeing him in the hoops in 2026."
