Match Preview | Cats Look to Extend Winning Streak at Adelaide Oval

In preparation for tomorrow's clash with Port Adelaide, take a look ahead at everything you need to know as Geelong returns to ANZAC Day football for the first time in 18 years

    Proudly presented by

    LKK

Geelong's hot form at Adelaide Oval will be put to the test this weekend, as they head to the City of Churches for the second time in three weeks to take on Port Adelaide.

The Cats have not lost at Adelaide Oval since 2023, winning five consecutive games by an average of 40 points, kicking 95 points or more in each of those five games.

It is also set to be Geelong's first appearance on ANZAC Day since 2008, with the Cats looking to build after winning four out of their last five matches.

Port Adelaide have won two of their opening six games this year, but they pushed Hawthorn and St Kilda right to the wire over the past fortnight and will present another tough challenge.

Take a look at all the main details that you need to know ahead of Saturday's match, proudly presented by Lee Kum Kee.

    KEY DETAILS

    2026 AFL Season | Round 7
    Port Adelaide v Geelong Cats
    Adelaide Oval, Adelaide
    Saturday April 25, 6.35pm AEST

    TEAM SELECTION

    LAST TIME WE MET

The Cats hosted Port Adelaide in Round 21 last year and were tested early, with the Power starting strong and leaving scores level at quarter time.

But after the first break, Geelong flexed their muscle and pulled away kicking 14 goals to two between the second and third quarters, eventually cruising to an 88-point victory.

Jeremy Cameron kicked a game-high six goals, Jack Martin broke an AFL record with four goals in five minutes, while Max Holmes (35 disposals, two goals) was electric.

LEE KUM KEE - PIVOTAL MATCH-UP

    Mitch Georgiades v Jack Henry

Port Adelaide rely heavily on their superstar forward as their main avenue to goal, which means this tussle with the returning Jack Henry is going to be pivotal in the outcome of Saturday's match.

Georgiades has kicked 14 goals from his first six games of the season, but he ranks first in the AFL for marks inside 50 and second for marks on the lead, showing a clear desire from the Power to utilise him as the main target inside 50.

Henry made a solid start to the campaign and averaged over five intercept possessions per game, but he has also missed Geelong's last two matches and will be a welcome addition for Saturday's clash.

The Cats have previously found a successful formula for stopping Georgiades, restricting him to 12 goals from eight games and it will be something they will be looking to continue in Round 7.

    KEY PLAYER TO WATCH

    Ollie Dempsey

If there is one player that has certainly taken a liking to Adelaide Oval, it is Ollie Dempsey.

The star winger collected 24 disposals and two goals in Geelong's last trip to the venue, which backed up a 21-disposal and two goal outing in Gather Round last year against Adelaide.

Tending to enjoy the space and suited to his style, Dempsey averaged 19 disposals and a goal per game across five career appearances at the venue, his highest disposal average at any ground that he has played two or more games at.

Dempsey has also started 2026 in strong form, currently averaging a career-high 18.7 disposals per game and kicking eight goals from his six matches, so keep an eye on the young gun heading into Saturday's match.

AFL Match Report | Flat Cats Struggle in Adelaide

Catch up on all the action from Geelong's clash with Port Adelaide on ANZAC Day

Geelong has stumbled to a disappointing defeat on Saturday evening, falling to Port Adelaide by 30 points in the club's first ANZAC Day appearance since 2008.

Unable to recapture the magic of last week's big victory over the Bulldogs, the Cats struggled to match the home side around the ground and battled to transition the football out of their back half, ultimately succumbing to Port Adelaide's dominance in general play.

With the sheer weight of entries coming into the defensive 50, Tom Stewart (26 disposals, eight intercepts) did everything he could to try and keep his side in the contest, while Connor O'Sullivan (21 disposals, nine intercepts) and Lawson Humphries (19 disposals) also worked hard under immense pressure.

Bailey Smith (30 disposals, five clearances) and Tanner Bruhn (24 disposals) found plenty of the football, while Jeremy Cameron (three goals) was the pick of Geelong's forwards in a tough night for the Cats' attack.

    00:48

Geelong raced out of the blocks and looked in full control early in the first quarter, dominating around stoppages and kicking four out of the opening five goals, but Port Adelaide quickly wrestled back momentum and kicked three unanswered majors to leave the Cats trailing by six points at quarter time.

The clearance battle (14-5) was firmly in Geelong's favour and Oisin Mullin certainly played his part, limiting Zak Butters to just three disposals in the first quarter while also winning three clearances of his own.

Fresh off his 10-goal haul against the Bulldogs, Jeremy Cameron was involved early with two majors but the Cats also struggled to find an answer for Mitch Georgiades, with Port Adelaide's spearhead recording six scoring shots in the opening term alone.

The pressure from both sides was immense but the Cats were on the back foot in the second quarter, struggling to gain the ascendancy around the ground as the Power extended their lead to 13 points at half time.

Bailey Smith (17 disposals, four score involvements) found plenty of the footy in the opening half, Cameron (three goals) led the way up forward, while Connor O'Sullivan and Mark O'Connor registered 11 intercept possessions between them to help limit the damage on the scoreboard.

Mullin entered his 50th AFL game having never collected more than four clearances in a match, but the Irishman absolutely obliterated his career-high by collecting seven clearances in the first half, while still limiting Butters to just two clearances in a strong start.

Geelong's inability to transition the football continued into the second half and they were held scoreless through the opening 10 minutes of the third term, Shannon Neale produced a brilliant goal but the deficit drifted out to 24 points at the final break.

Any hopes of a late charge from the Cats were dashed early in the final quarter as Port Adelaide piled on three goals in quick succession, despite some nice finishing around the big sticks from Shaun Mannagh and James Worpel.

Brad Close added another goal late but the result was well out of reach, Geelong slipping to their third loss of the season in a tough night at Adelaide Oval.
