Geelong will be looking to get back on the winners list after a narrow defeat to Collingwood, but has another big challenge awaiting it in the form of the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos at University of Tasmania Stadium on Friday evening.

After lopsided contests early in their rivalry, the two 2019 expansion sides look set for another enthralling contest, following a close Season 6 battle.

Key Points

Cats’ Clearance Edge
Geelong is yet to be beaten in the clearance count in Season 7. With Liv Fuller leading in the ruck – well supported by Kalani Scoullar on Saturday – and a strong fleet of in-form midfielders, the Cats have edged out their opponents in all three clashes.

The Cats went 22-18 against the Tigers, 27-24 against the Dockers and 24-19 against Collingwood.

Amy McDonald leads the way with 18 clearances for the season, an average of six per game, to sit third overall in the league.

Captain Meg Leading the Way
Meghan McDonald is making an early case for a third All-Australian jumper. The Cats skipper was strong in defence once again against Collingwood, winning one-on-one contests and taking intercept marks, including a brilliant pack mark in the final term.

After the game, fellow defender Annabel Johnson said, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen her (McDonald) lose a one-on-one. She’s a bull and I love playing with her.”

Geelong’s defence has been brilliant in the opening three weeks, conceding an average of just nine points a game, their 27 points conceded for the season comfortably the lowest of any team.

Roos’ Dynamic Duo
While Geelong’s midfielders have been gathering some impressive numbers, they will need to keep a couple of key Kangaroos from doing so on Friday if they’re to win the midfield battle.

Jasmine Garner has had a brilliant start to Season 7, twice polling the maximum 10 coaches’ votes, and leads the AFL Coaches’ Association Champion Player of the Year award.

Garner is averaging 24.3 disposals a game, while her teammate Ashleigh Riddell is averaging 21.

Riddell was dominant against Geelong when the sides met last season, notching up 35 disposals and helping her team get across the line in a close one.

The Cats will need to bring their pressure A-game in the midfield if they’re to keep the pair quiet.
