De Koning was reinstated as Geelong's starting ruckman early in the season, spending the first three weeks as the primary big man in the middle and impressing during the stint. 

In the Cats season opener against Fremantle, De Koning was heavily influential collecting 25 disposals and 18 hit-outs in the victory, ultimately awarded two Brownlow votes for his performance. 

But from Round 4 onwards, the 24-year-old returned to his usual role at AFL level, re-establishing himself in Geelong's back six and being the anchor in defence for the remainder of the season. 

Despite his time in the ruck, De Koning still finished in the top five players at Geelong for spoils, intercept marks, one percenters and intercept possessions.
