When the day comes for Brandan Parfitt to debut, there will be at least one Geelong champion in his corner.

The Cats’ first selection in the 2016 national draft, Parfitt inherited the no.3 guernsey most recently made famous across the 305-game career of three-time premiership player and Brownlow medallist Jimmy Bartel.

Speaking to 1116 SEN, Bartel reflected upon his initial steps with the no.3 on his back and how he formed strong ties to those players who donned the jumper before him.

“I remember I got a letter from Fred Wooller before I played my first game and that led to a bond and connection with Fred that I treasured and still treasure today,” Bartel said.

“I’d like to hopefully grow a similar bond with Brandan as his career unfolds because my bond with Fred, who messaged me for every milestone game, was really special.”

Parfitt has been selected in the Cats’ 29-man squad to face Hawthorn in Launceston as part of the JLT Community Series.

Whether he takes to the field for the first time Friday night or is made to wait that little bit longer, Bartel is fully behind him and will be even more so when a debut does come.

“He’s shot to top of the list as my favourite player at the Cats,” he said.

“He’s a ripping kid and I’m just excited to see him play. I want the No. 3 to be the best player on the team.”
