SAM Menegola’s story is one of persistence.

Having previously been on the rookie lists at Hawthorn and Fremantle, the 23-year-old was Geelong’s second selection (pick No. 66) in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

"Sam is a strong bodied midfielder and he can also go forward," Cats recruiting and list manager Stephen Wells said.

"He has experience in the AFL system and he really dominated in the WAFL with Subiaco this past season."

AFL.com.au describes Menegola as follows:

“Spent 2011 on Hawthorn's rookie list before three seasons at Fremantle as a rookie but never played an AFL game.

“The 188cm midfielder has incredible endurance and was the Dockers' best runner while he was there.

“Ran a 14.13 beep test at the WA state combine.

“After he was delisted at the end of 2014 he dominated the WAFL in 2015.

“Averaged 27 disposals in Subiaco's premiership side and finished third in the Sandover Medal despite playing just 12 home and away games.”

Menegola, who is a close friend of Fremantle superstar Nat Fyfe, was profiled in the West Australian in August.

At that stage he was not contemplating getting another chance in the AFL.

But his coach at Subiaco, former West Coast, Port Adelaide and Fremantle midfielder Jarrad Schofield, was certain that he had the attributes to make it in the big time.

“He kicks goals, he gets clearances. He was always a natural forward as a junior,” Schofield said.

“Now what we’re seeing with his game is his inside work an an on-baller, and because of his elite endurance he posts big numbers.

“He’s always getting his 30-plus possessions because of his high work ethic and his running capabilities are AFL standard.”
