The Cats have officially tabled an offer for restricted free agent Scott Selwood, with the Eagles having 72 hours to decide whether to match the offer.

If the Eagles do not match the offer, Selwood will officially join the Cats. If they match, the Cats and Eagles would be required to work a trade.

He has played just 25 games in two years and was not part of the Eagles' preliminary final or Grand Final teams, after a solid performance as the substitute in the qualifying final due to an ongoing ankle injury.

However he was an excellent performer before the injury, being the club's vice-captain and winning the 2012 best and fairest.

The Cats have been interested in adding players with leadership qualities who are in Selwood's age bracket.

Selwood was selection No.22 in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft.
