Ahead of Saturday’s qualifying final Harry Taylor takes a look at one of Fremantle’s most ominous players from the midfield, David Mundy.

Taylor concludes that Mundy, who played 124 games consecutively after his debut in 2005, is one of the most talented clearance players in the AFL.

“He is one of the best clearance players in the competition, averaging six clearances a game for Fremantle, which ranks him number one at that club and overall he’s in the top six in the competition,” Taylor said.

“So he’s a very effective clearance player that we’re going to have to pay a lot of attention to at every single stoppage in the middle and also around the ground.”

Along with his clearance abilities Mundy also has a superb way of using the ball and directing it towards goal if he’s left unattended.

“He is also very good at using the ball inside-50 averaging four inside-50s a game at the moment and he generally hits target every single time,” Taylor explained.

“So us defenders are going to have to pay a lot of attention to his ability to use the ball going inside-50.

“It’s really important that we stop him from getting those great match ups with Aaron Sandilands in the stoppage contest, and it’s important that we don’t let those two team up and hit the ball to where they want to. Otherwise Mundy gets the easy clearances going forward and uses his good kicking inside-50.”
