It took all of a quarter of football – perhaps even less – for Zac Smith to win over a new legion of fans.

The 206cm ruckman was a pillar of strength in his first game for Geelong, booting three goals and demonstrating textbook tap work with persistent tackling pressure to help his new side ensure a memorable Easter Monday victory over reigning premier Hawthorn by 30 points.

“I had those butterflies but once the first bounce was underway it was just things as normal,” Smith said post-match.

“I was fortunate to get on the end of a few and make a few tackles and stuff like that … it was a great way to start.”

Since moving from the Gold Coast Suns for two third round picks in last year’s trade period, Smith has failed to put a foot wrong and his round one performance only further solidifies his position as the Cat’s number one ruckman.

Smith had 14 disposals and 16 hit-outs to go with his three first half goals on Monday.

“That’s the way you want to start the season – with a win,” Smith said.

“It just gives you so much confidence, especially against a really quality side. Really looking forward to next week now.”
