Andrew Mackie expects Greater Western Sydney to be a very formidable opponent when the teams meet in Canberra on Sunday.

The Giants went down to Melbourne in a close one at the MCG on Saturday, but the Cats will not be underestimating them.

“We’re acutely aware how good they can be and they would be wanting to bounce back from last week,” Mackie said during a press conference at Simonds Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

“We look forward to the challenge.

“We go up to Canberra, it’s a big ground and they’ve got some really quick players, so we’ve got to be on our game this weekend.”

Geelong played GWS in Canberra last season, and the game drew a crowd of almost 15,000 to StarTrack Oval, which was a record for a Giants game at the venue.

However, the game turned out to be a scrappy encounter, with the Cats prevailing 9.15 (69) to 6.6 (42).

This time around, Chris Scott’s side will head to the nation’s capital in even better shape after their impressive win over Hawthorn on Easter Monday.

Mackie has certainly taken plenty of confidence out of the victory.

“To play in front of a big crowd, against a really formidable opponent, and get out on top, was really positive,” he said.

“It’s always good to beat them."

But Mackie believes the Cats still have plenty of areas for improvement.

“We were far from perfect on the weekend,” he said.

“We’ve just had a meeting and there’s a lot of things we need to work on.

“But the season needs to build. It’s not going to be a masterpiece by round one or two.

“We’ve got new players in our system who need to keep learning and we need to keep learning about how they go about it.

“So it will take time.”
