Young Cat Brad Hartman, who played his fifth AFL game last Saturday night against the Hawks, has come a long way since arriving at the club at draft pick number 77 in 2012.

Chris Scott says the Cats aren’t exactly “shocked” by the 19-year-olds vast improvement over the 2014 season, however, an AFL debut and a string of five AFL games would have not been expected at this stage of his career.

“I wouldn’t go so far as to say we’re shocked by it but he has certainly come from a long way back when he was taken at a late pick in the draft,” Chris Scott said on Cats TV.

“He was probably far behind in his development given that he didn’t play much junior football, he had more of a basketball background.”

When Hartman was called up to make his debut against St Kilda in Round 13, he delivered a solid game of 14 touches, five tackles and three inside-50s.

And last Saturday night against the Hawks, the developing midfielder collected 11 touches, three tackles, three inside-50s and one goal assist.

Considering all the hours Hartman has put into training, Scott is not entirely staggered by his on-field achievements.

“I guess getting to see his development day in and day out from a coaching perspective, he probably hasn’t surprised us as much as you as a fan, given that you can’t see all the work that he puts in on the track,” Scott said.
