Irish recruit Mark O'Connor has been upgraded from Geelong's rookie list to its senior list and will make his AFL debut this weekend.

The 20-year-old, who has been an impressive performer in the VFL in recent weeks, will add some pace and flair to the Cats' midfield in Saturday night's Powercor Country Festival game at the MCG.

A star Gaelic footballer with Kerry in his teenage years, O'Connor only joined the Cats last October, when he was listed as a 'Category B' rookie under the AFL's rules for promoting talent from non-Australian Rules backgrounds.

His improvement since then has been very impressive, hence his call-up to the senior list and the announcement that he will take on the Bombers.

A spot on the Cats' senior list opened up last week when first-year midfielder Brandan Parfitt was placed on the long-term injury list.
