Geelong’s VFLW side is ready to make history as it embarks its first ever finals series this Sunday.

The Cats will face the NT Thunder at Stannards Stadium (North Port Oval) at 11:45am in an elimination semi-final, and according to skipper Bec Goring the team can’t wait to take the field.

“It’s fantastic, it’s really exciting and the vibe around the group’s really good,” she said.

“This is a first for us, it’s going to be a challenging game but we’re ready to take it on. As part of the leadership group and as a captain we’re really excited for our VFLW team.”

Goring was named as the Cats’ inaugural VFLW captain in 2017 and said that the most enjoyable part of leading the team again this year is seeing the close bonds that have been formed.

“I think the best part about leading this group is just the sense of unity among the girls,” she said.

“We all do very different things in terms of our careers and our lives outside of football but we’re really there for each other on and off the field, which makes it really easy to play well together as well.”

The Cats are ready for the challenge that the NT Thunder will bring after losing to them in difficult Darwin conditions in round nine.

“We’ll treat is as pretty much every other game but obviously with that finals pace and that finals pressure,” Goring said.

“We’ve prepared well and we’re definitely going to take it up to the Thunder, that’s for sure.”

The final game of the home and away season saw Geelong go down to Hawthorn in a battle for a top two finish, but Goring said that this result has helped her side prepare during the bye week.

“I think that loss against the Hawks just showed that we can be a resilient team and we backed that up with some really solid training, and now hopefully with a really good win against the NT Thunder.”

Sunday is set to be a big day for the club, with the VFL Cats set to take the field after the VFLW in a finals double header. According to Goring, the support of as many Geelong fans as possible will be vital in this history-making final.

“I would say to all Cats fans to definitely come down and support our women’s team,” she said.

“The brand of footy is entertaining, it’s fantastic, and it’s going to make us kick a heck of a lot more goals so we need our supporters there cheering loud.”
