A big positive to come from Sunday's game against GWS was the return of defender, Jed Bews who slotted seamlessly back into the Geelong line-up in Round 9.

After missing the opening months of the season with a finger injury, Bews was injected into the Cats defensive unit and did not miss a beat, collecting 17 disposals and seven marks against the Giants.

The reliable defender showed no signs of rust as he went at a very impressive 88% disposal efficiency, generating over 500 metres gained and five score involvements from half back.

Following an extended stint on the sidelines, Bews said it was exciting to be running back out with the team and taking the field once again.

"It was awesome, I love playing for the team," Bews told Cats Media following the clash with GWS.

"I was a bit fortunate with a few injuries, they came knocking and I was ready.

"To be out on the ground with the boys again was good fun, hopefully there is a few more to come and we can get some more wins.

"I thought we had our chances late in the game, just couldn't quite grab them. It was a bit of a shootout at times, it was high scoring so it was a good game to be a part of."

After a slow start saw the Cats concede five of the first six goals, Geelong were able to peg back the deficit and work their way back into the match.

Through the first nine games the Cats are rated as one of the best offensive teams in the league, averaging 95 points per game and scoring over 100 points for the third time on the weekend.

Despite the end result, Bews said the game gave the team plenty to work on as they head into another big clash this weekend.

"We probably just used the footy a little bit better after quarter time," Bews said.

"We attacked better which allowed us to defend better. The first 15 minutes they were really good, we arrested momentum back after that and we felt like we were in the game for the rest of it.

"Credit to GWS though they are a good team, they ran in waves through the middle and used it really.

"It is something that we have to work on."
