2024 VFLW Round 2 - Sophie Mahar in action for Geelong against Box Hill

Round Two of the VFLW season rolled around on a beautiful Easter Saturday, with Geelong unable to take the chocolates as they fell to Box Hill by 96 points at GMHBA Stadium.

The experienced Hawks flexed their muscles early against a young Cats outfit, controlling general play and connecting well all over the field.

Geelong fielded just six players with AFLW experience, in comparison to the 16 Box Hill played who have spent time at the top level.

CATS v HAWKS - Full Match Coverage and Stats

With a goal in the opening minutes to go with another on the quarter time siren, the Hawks started to capitalise on their dominance by applying scoreboard pressure on the Cats.

The second quarter proved to be much of the same with Geelong finding it difficult to get their hands on the footy, as the Hawks intense pressure made it hard for the Cats to exit their defensive 50.

Box Hill were wayward with their chances in front of goal kicking 2.6 in the second quarter, as the Cats faced a 29 point deficit at the main break.

Johanna Sunderland was lively down back with the second gamer proving to be a real highlight for Geelong, collecting 11 disposals in the first half.

Cats VFLW Coach, Elise Coventry sparked something in her team during the main break, as they brought the heat to begin the third term.

Brooke Plummer was the catalyst with her brilliant run and carry, a couple of big marks and her clearance work allowing for some repeat inside 50’s for Geelong.

Despite the resurgence of energy the Cats were unable to cut into the Box Hill lead, as the Hawks got the game back on to their terms scoring an additional three goals to end the quarter.

Box Hill's experience was evident late in the game, saving their best quarter for last and running away with the contest.

They were able to score seven of their 14 goals in the last term, stretching the margin to 96 points when the final siren rang.

The Hawks led in most of the major stat lines including Disposals (+104), Inside 50’s (+33) and Clearances (+14).

Geelong will look to bounce back as they continue their search for the first win of 2024, against the Southern Saints next Saturday.
