Geelong draftee Gryan Miers says he’s already come a long way in just a few short months in the AFL system.

The prolific small-forward told the Geelong Advertiser in a 40-page magazine coming out tomorrow that there’s a lot to learn at AFL level.

“Leading patterns, how to work for each other, tackling techniques. There’s a lot of team things (that we’ve learned),” Miers said.

“One player (out of position) can ruin a whole team structure.”

“In drills, the intensity is unbelievable. You’ve got to really bring it or you’re going to be smashed by some of these big players.”

Miers said an early run-in with Nakia Cockatoo showed him just the level that was required.

“The second week I was training, and I thought I’d tackle Nakia Cockatoo, just wrap my arms around him,” Miers said.

“He didn’t even notice I was there, I just fell to the floor and he ran off. I was thinking, ‘Oh God, I’ve got to work on that’.

Miers kicked a goal in his first quarter of football for the Cats, converting a set shot in humid Townsville against a rampant Suns outfit.

He gathered 11 possessions in a loss to the Bombers in round two of the community series, while laying three tackles.
