THE HORROR run of injuries has continued for Billie Smedts with the luckless Geelong midfielder breaking his leg in the VFL on Sunday.

Smedts, who turns 24 on Tuesday, only broke back into the senior team last week after five consecutive VFL games following surgery on his shoulder that delayed his start to the season.

Despite a reasonable performance against Carlton, he was back in the VFL at Simonds Stadium on Sunday against Sandringham after making way for the return of Dan Menzel and Lincoln McCarthy.

Smedts has had little chance to play continuous football, having broken his leg in 2014, broken his collarbone in 2015 and then had surgery to reconstruct his shoulder at the beginning of the season.

He has played 38 games for the Cats and is contracted until the end of next season.

The Cats are also waiting on scans to show the extent of injury to young defender Josh Cowan, who hurt his knee during the game.

The good news for Geelong was the return of Mitch Clark up forward and Sam Menegola in the midfield after long stints on the sidelines.
