Jordan Schroder has capped of another terrific season at VFL level by winning the 2014 Geelong VFL Best & Fairest award.

The 2013 J.J Liston Trophy recipient polled to 625 votes to win by 16 votes from evergreen veteran Dom Gleeson (609), with emerging defender Joel Hamling (593) a further 16 votes behind in third place.

The 21 year old midfielder who was taken with pick number 54 in the 2010 national draft, played 15 out of 18 matches, kicked 8 goals and was named in the best players on 7 occasions.

After finishing third behind Mark Corrigan & Mitch Brown in 2013, retiring skipper Gleeson showed he is going out at the top of his game by finishing runner-up to his 2012 VFL premiership teammate.

Gleeson 31, retired in the week following the VFL Cats final home and away match after a highly decorated career at state level. The popular clubman has since been appointed playing coach of Bellarine Football League club Torquay.

Third year key position player Joel Hamling (593) beat off fellow tall defenders Jake Kolodjashnij (591) and Matthew Sully (584) to record his first podium finish. After finishing fourth in 2013, it was the second consecutive top five result for the ever reliable Sully.

The list of players in the top 10 reflected the changing face of the VFL line up.

It featured four VFL listed players – Gleeson, Matthew Sully (5th), Jack Hollmer (7th) and Mitch Herbison (equal 9th) and two first year AFL listed players – Jake Kolodjashnij (4th) and Jarrad Jansen (10th).

The awards will be presented at the 2014’Carji’ Greeves Medal night on the 2nd of October.
