Geelong is set to host a home final in two weeks' time after a gutsy win over Collingwood at the AIA Centre on Saturday.

After the Cats controlled proceedings in the first half, the Pies fought back to take the lead early in the last, before a string of three Cats goals saw the visitors win 6.9 (45) to 4.2 (26).

The win sees the Cats finish the home and away season in fourth spot, with an elimination final looming against rivals Southern Saints on the Queen's Birthday Long Weekend.

The Cats will take heart from the fact they were once again able to wrest back control of a match when it wasn't going to plan, and that they were able to run the game out well to finish strong.

"Our first half was really strong - it was maybe 25-8 inside 50s, and we just didn't get our value (for them)," Geelong VFLW senior coach Andrew Bruce said.

"The third quarter was horrible for us, and the girls got a bit of an old-fashioned bake at three-quarter time.

"It was pleasing that even when Collingwood came out and kicked the first goal, that we were able to get momentum in our own game again and fix it, which was great."

A sterling effort from Geelong's defenders - equal parts class and grit - kept Collingwood scoreless to half-time, with the Cats building up a 23-point lead.

It could have been more, but for missed opportunities, which threatened to come back and haunt the Cats as the Magpies piled on three unanswered goals in the third term.

The Cats came out determined to turn things around in the fourth, but when the Magpies got the first goal to take the lead for the first time all afternoon, they had a big challenge before them.

The returning Breanna Pratt broke through with a goal that was sheer desperation, and her commitment proved to be a team lifter, with goals to Mia Skinner and Emily Ramsay following as the Cats showed they are still a force to be reckoned with in season 2022.

Carly Remmos laid an incredible 16 tackles in the first half when the game's intensity was at its highest, while Paige Sheppard was right in amongst the action, collecting 24 disposals, five marks and four clearances for the game.

Bruce praised Pratt's return game as well, noting her work rate  impact on the game.

"It was really pleasing for Breanna Pratt to be back in the side as well. I'm not sure how many possessions (she had), but her impact on the game was actually quite good, with her tackle pressure and her intensity around the footy, so that was great."

Kalani Scoullar (19 hitouts) and Rene Caris (14) proved a strong pair in the ruck, with the Cats manufacturing some nice clearances out of the centre.

Geelong won the inside 50 count 45-25, with much of the game being played in their forward half.

The VFLW will have a pre-finals bye next weekend, before finals begin on the weekend of June 11/12.

Details of the finals matches are yet to be confirmed.
