All-Australian squad duo Tom Hawkins and Tom Stewart are in contention for the AFL Players’ Association MVP Award, as the AFL Players MVP nominees were revealed on Thursday.

Hawkins and Stewart, alongside reigning Carji Greeves Medallist Cam Guthrie, are Geelong’s three nominees for the peer-voted MVP award.

Hawkins, who is set to play game 300 this weekend, has had another stellar season. He finished second in the Coleman Medal race, with 54 majors and was fifth overall for score involvements (161).

The key forward ranked elite for average disposals (13.5), goals (2.5), marks inside 50 (3.4) and contested possessions (6.8).

Stewart, who is sidelined with a Linsfranc injury, has backed-up last year’s All-Australian season with another impressive home-and-away season.

The defender is ranked elite across a swathe of stats, including average disposals (24), marks (8.9), disposal efficiency (84.8 per cent), intercept possessions (7.8) and metres gained (493.7). He also leads the league for marks this season.

Guthrie has again led the way in the midfield for Geelong, and is the top-ranked Cat in average disposals (30) and stoppage clearances (3.8). He also ranks elite for average marks (6).

Max Holmes is the Cats’ nominee the Best First Year Player, while Jack Henry has been nominated for the Most Courageous Player, and Joel Selwood is in the running for best captain.

Voting for the awards is a two-step process: first, players nominate a teammate for the awards, which forms the shortlist revealed today.

Then, voting is opened up to players across the whole competition to vote for the overall winners, with players unable to vote for a player from their own club.

The AFL Players Association will recognise the winners during a special collaboration with The Front Bar on Channel 7 on Thursday, September 2.
