Paul was recruited from Warrnambool and will always remember his first game against North Melbourne as he had the ominous task of playing on three champions, his opponents being Keith Greig, Ross Glendinning, and Wayne Schimmelbusch. It certainly did him no harm and as his career progressed he too would become a champion. Gifted with considerable talent and the ability to read the play, he could always move to the best position to take the ball and place his team with the advantage. His brilliant play rewarded in 1989 when he won the prestigious Brownlow Medal. As a centre player he was the pivot for the outstanding teams of the 1990s and displayed uncanny skill and the ability to out manoeuvre opponents and place the ball to his teammates. He had a special understanding with Gary Ablett when he was playing at full forward. When Gary led out and marked the ball kicked by Paul with pinpoint accuracy, it was football at its best and thrilled the supporters.
