Fred was recruited from Swan Hill, and just about accomplished everything possible in his ten years at the Club. A leader both on and off the field he possessed outstanding football skills, whether it be marking or kicking, or general positional play. He was fast and fair, with a perfect physique for a key position. His strong marking usually finished off with a right foot drop kick that would always bring forth an enthusiastic roar from the crowd. He had a truly magnificent and distinguished career. A returned serviceman, Fred was wounded and decorated. In recent years he has maintained his link with his war service as honorary secretary of Geelong Legacy, and as President.
