‘Carji’ was recruited from Cressy in 1923 after showing outstanding sporting ability as a student at Geelong College. In 1924 he became the inaugural winner of the Brownlow Medal. A measure of his brilliant play is demonstrated when he was second in 1925, 1926 and 1928. He had such natural talent that he appeared to have plenty of time in gaining possession and to then glide past his opponents and deliver the ball either by a grass cutting stab pass, or a long drop kick to his team mates with utmost precision. With his splendid ground play and classic kicking style he had the ability to win the game off his own boot. As an indication of how well he kicked a football he was invited in 1928 to visit the University of South Carolina where he instructed the “Trojans” gridiron team in the art of kicking. He was an outstanding success as the team that had scored only one field goal the previous year, kicked 23 and won the championship.
