Bob was recruited from Golden Point, and quickly made a name for himself as an outstanding footballer who epitomised what a half forward flanker should be. Although he played in other positions, it was as a half forward flanker that he first displayed his explosive pace and strength, which earned him the nickname as the ‘Geelong Flier’. Strongly built, Bob was a nightmare for the half back flankers. When he had the ball, they could not catch him. His class and undoubted flair made him a crowd favourite and his electrifying dashes inspirational to his teammates. He had an illustrious career and is one of Geelong’s, “favourite sons”. He retired when still playing at a high standard. And left many great memories for those who saw him play. Turning to coaching after his mentor, Reg Hickey, he set his own standards where he had a father like relationship with his players, they responded in the best possible way when Geelong won the 1963 Premiership.
