Outlook

Injury-prone but talented big man, who has been dangerous up forward and valuable in the ruck. Was eased into last season after struggling to overcome hip problems during the summer. Played his first AFL game in round 10 and wasted no time making an impression, booting four goals against Gold Coast at Simonds Stadium. The poor form of fellow big man Trent West and injuries to Hamish McIntosh and Dawson Simpson meant he found himself carrying the mantle as Geelong’s No. 1 ruckman by the end of the year.

Dale Amos' player review for 2013

In the end, we got more out of Vards than we thought we might. There was a bit of uncertainty about how his hip would go, and it will need to be managed throughout his career, but for him to play as much AFL footy as he did was a real bonus for us. He had a number of good games. When we beat the Swans down here at Simonds Stadium he took some great marks and kicked a few goals. He is in a good position to attack the pre-season and hopefully play consistently well in the AFL next year.
