There were a number of areas that let the Cats down on Friday night against the Hawks, and unfortunately the midfield was one of them.

Although the Cats managed to seal four more clearances over the Hawks, Scott Gullan felt the Cats run towards their end of the goal square was heavily smothered by an experienced pack of Hawks.

Friday night key defender Brian Lake kept Tom Hawkins with only one goal, however, Gullan believes it was the shaky supply of inside-50s that caused the Cats number one forward to flounder.

“I think the delivery into (Hawkins) and the midfield were under a lot of pressure, I think that’s more the issue,” Gullan told Cats TV on this week’s Argue the Toss.

With the Cats looking stretched in the middle, Gullan felt James Kelly would have been more valuable back in his former position in the centre, instead of being restricted to the backline.

“Kelly got buried in the back pocket I thought on Friday night, get him up in the midfield…” Gullan said.

“I don’t think they had enough midfield support and they let (Sam) Mitchell get away and it was too late.”

A young Cat who did stand up to the intensity of the game and produced a solid first half was Josh Walker.

“He was Doug Wade for the first half, he took two of the best contested-marks and he kicked a great goal. He did his role I think,” Gullan said.
