MANY Cats fans around the world are doing extraordinary things.

One such person is Jarrod Evans, who was the 2013 Triathlon Australia coach of the year and is now the national development coach with USA Triathlon, based in Phoenix, Arizona.

A former coach at the Victorian Institute of Sport, Evans has recently been overseeing a training camp in Victoria that is part of USA Triathlon's preparations for next year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

On Thursday morning, Evans, who is a friend of Geelong board member Bob Gartland, brought a few of his athletes to Simonds Stadium to check out how the Cats go about their training.

"I'm from Geelong originally and my parents still live here," Evans said. "Because I'm working for another country now, I don't get home that often.

"But at this time of the year a lot of our competitions are in Australia, New Zealand and the Asian countries, so it fitted in well to come down here and have a training camp."

Among the group that Evans brought to Simonds Stadium was star female triathlete Renee Tomlin, who recently became the first American to win a sporting event in Cuba for 50 years.

"It was a fluke that there was a triathlon scheduled in Cuba just after President Obama lifted the embargo," Evans said.

Evans said that his team members had recently been introduced to Australia's wildlife when they were almost cleaned up by a large kangaroo that jumped out in front of them while they were on a training ride.

He joked that the American athletes were subsequently disappointed that there were no kangaroos bounding down the aisles in the supermarkets as was portrayed in the Simpsons episode set in Australia.
