New Cat Sam Blease is hoping building on his strengths and working on his weaknesses will kick start his AFL career.

Delisted by the Demons after six years with the club, Blease was signed by the Cats on Monday as a delisted free agent.

Speaking with SEN, Blease said the Cats met him early on in October about joining the club.

“I first spoke to them the first couple of days of trade period and went down to Simonds Stadium and met with Wellsy (Stephen Wells), Balmey (Neil Balme) and a couple of the other recruiters which was really good.” Blease said.

“It’s worked out really well and I’m really excited to starting my career down at Geelong."

“I’m really looking forward to taking this opportunity with both hands and really looking forward to being a part of the Geelong footy club.”

Despite only managing two games in 2014, the 17th pick from the 2008 draft still thought he had plenty to give at the highest level.

“Certainly, I did.” Blease said.

“I still felt I had a lot to offer and I felt that my VFL season this year was probably my most consistent since I’ve been at the club.

“At times it was very frustrating, I guess, that I felt like I was in relatively good form and I was trying to work on the things down at Casey that the coaches wanted me to work on but unfortunately they didn’t see me in their plans.”

Known for his blistering pace and eye for the goals, Blease believes that this strengths will bode well for him at the Cats.

“I think I’ve got some strengths that I can bring to AFL footy that can be quite an asset to the Geelong footy club.”

“Obviously the speed and goal kicking ability that I’ve got and at times I see myself as a relatively good kick.

“With the loss of Varcoe and Christensen which are big losses for the footy club, that is sort of a role I can see myself playing.”

But what Blease is really hoping to show is that he can overcome perceived weaknesses in his game including his endurance levels and defensive work.

“It’s been something on-going that I’ve been trying to work on and I’m catching up with a few coaches this week to address the things we want to get out of 2015 season.”
