Before Geelongcalled out Mitch Duncan’s name at pick 28 in the 2009 national draft, theyoungster from Western Australia had no clues to where he would end up.

 

Leading up to thedraft, Duncan felt he was in a good position for selection and he had a lot offriends from his junior club in the same boat.

 

Despite this,Duncan stuck to having a quiet affair with his family watching it on TV.  

 

“I was kind ofconfident that I was going to get drafted, it was just a matter of where I wasgoing to end up?” Duncan told Cats TV.

 

“I was just athome with my Mum and Dad… nothing big.”

 

By the timeDuncan’s name was announced by Geelong a number of his footy friends hadalready been drafted.

 

“Kane Lucas gotdrafted number 12 to Carlton, he was one of my best mates from school so thatwas good to see,” Duncan said.

 

“Brad Sheppardwent number 7 to the Eagles, there were heaps that I played with that gotdrafted.

 

“I saw it (myname) up on the screen, it was really surreal and Mum jumped on me, it was anamazing experience.”

 

Duncan debuted ayear after and was nominated for the AFLPA Best First Year Player Award at theend of 2010.

 

The last game Geelong played in the 2014 season the young midfielder, who delivered 10 touches and one goal in the 2011 premiership, hit a significant milestone of 100 games whilst collectinga career best of 23 goals.
