Geelong coach Chris Scott says replacing Harry Taylor in attack with veteran defender Tom Lonergan is an option that has warranted discussion.

Lonergan has played predominantly in defence throughout the majority of his 186 games with the Cats, though following a near career-ending kidney injury in 2006, the now 32-year-old returned to football as a forward.

A six-goal, best on ground performance in the VFL Cats’ 2007 grand final win highlighted his potency in front of goal, while at AFL level, Longeran has kicked 55 goals.

The use of All-Australian defender Harry Taylor as Geelong’s second key forward this season has sparked debate across the football landscape, but asked on Momentum Energy’s #AskTheCoach this week, senior coach Chris Scott revealed Lonergan is a live option to replace Taylor.

“There’s a couple of coaches in our group in particular that think he would be a good option,” Scott said.

“He’s probably in his last year or two at the club and has proven to be a really high-level defender and probably someone that, more than any other player in the competition, has proven that he’s able to take on the really, really high-class forwards – Lance Franklin for example – and acquit himself well.

“It’s certainly an option we’ve talked about, we’ve practiced a little bit. We’re just choosing to not go with it right at the moment.

“It doesn’t mean that we won’t at some point.”
