Cats superstar Patrick Dangerfield has opened up on the mental battles that he has faced during his football career.

"In the AFL industry, people talk about courage - running back with the flight of the ball or putting yourself in harm's way," Dangerfield told Angie Hilton in an interview for the upcoming episode of Channel 9 program Destination Happiness.

"Courage, I think, is people standing up and saying they've got a few issues and need to take a step back at different stages, and we've seen that over the past 12 months with quite a few footballers.

"I look at that and go, 'That's true courage.'

"I don't think there's been a person that hasn't at some stage experienced that feeling of melancholy or disappointment or uncertainty ... so you need to find someone, for one, to talk to ... because at some point it reaches a tipping point.

"It sort of happened four or five years into my career where it all just got too much, so you need to find that person to have those conversations with."

Patrick Dangerfield's appearance on Destination Happiness will screen on Channel 9 on Saturday at 12pm.
