Joel Selwood will captain Geelong for a sixth straight season after the Cats’ player leadership group was announced at the club's Season Launch at Crown Palladium on Wednesday night.

Selwood will lead an eight-man leadership group for the 2017 season which includes existing members Harry Taylor, Patrick Dangerfield, Tom Hawkins, Mitch Duncan and Mark Blicavs.

Midfielders Scott Selwood and Cameron Guthrie will join the club’s leadership group for the first time.

Selwood will embark on his second season at the club following his move from West Coast at the end of 2015. The 26-year-old was vice captain of the Eagles from 2014-2015.

Guthrie, 24, will join the leadership group after six seasons and 108 games in the blue and white hoops.

After an extraordinary debut season in 2016, including winning the Brownlow Medal and the club’s ‘Carji’ Greeves Medal, Patrick Dangerfield has been elevated to co-vice captain alongside two-time All Australian Harry Taylor.

Tom Hawkins, Mark Blicavs and Mitch Duncan continue in their leadership group roles.

“I could not be more excited about the season ahead,” Geelong Cats captain Joel Selwood said.

“To have a larger leadership group with a range of ages and experience is a step in the right direction.

“Cam comes on board the player leadership group after a breakout season last year. He is well respected by his teammates and will be a great addition to the group.

“Scott is also a fantastic addition, he will utilise his experience from his time as vice-captain at West Coast to be a great leader at Geelong.

“Pat Dangerfield also steps up into a co-vice captaincy role alongside Harry Taylor this year. In his first season at the club he was able to earn the respect of his teammates, lead from the front whilst playing some impressive footy, his elevation is well deserved.

“Our 2017 player leadership group is full of commitment and enthusiasm and I can’t wait to work with this group throughout the year.”
