Hocking looking at earlier MRP decisions

AFL 2017 Media - AFL Announces Steve Hocking as GM of Football Operations

Steve Hocking

BRINGING forward Match Review Panel decisions for Thursday and Friday night matches is one of many items on new AFL football operations manager Steve Hocking's agenda.

The 52-year-old former Geelong footballer and football manager repeated his previous comments that he would take a "consultative and inclusive" approach to decision-making.

Reviewing the MRP process appears Hocking's top priority since officially starting his new role in mid-October.

"We're still working through that, so we're fairly keen to talk to stakeholders – umpires and also clubs and a number of other key people as well," Hocking said.

"There's a range of different thinking out there and obviously my role is to make sense of all of that and at the appropriate time communicate that to the broader football community.

"I do (have my own opinion), but I want to remain open on those thoughts as well. I don't want to just come in and just narrow down and say, 'It's my way or the highway'."

Hocking will also address the bounce's place in the game and the potential of a twilight Grand Final in the coming months, and was again unable to provide an update on AFLX.

AFL general manager of clubs and broadcasting Travis Auld is in charge of the modified, seven-a-side format, which involves 10-minute quarters and no centre bounces.

Play will resume from goals with a kick-out, and goals outside 40m register 10 points.

"Travis is all over (AFLX) and his team, and they're still working through a number of things," Hocking said.

"I don't want to deflect, but it's important for people to understand we want to get it right and we want to make sure it's an exciting product.

"We're certainly getting closer (to an announcement), but I won't put a timeline on it."
