The Cats might not be in top form at the moment, but you can't accuse them of not digging deep when they need do.

They could easily have rolled over when Fremantle raced to a 34-point lead late in the second quarter.

Instead, they overcame a host of setbacks and recorded their ninth win of the season, a victory that sees them remain in third place on the ladder.

Given the loss of Joel Selwood in the opening minute and the later injuries suffered by Tom Stewart (face) and Darcy Lang (calf), it was a win that has the potential to ignite the team's push towards September.

Some of the players who drove the Cats to victory were household names like Patrick Dangerfield, Zach Tuohy, Mitch Duncan, Daniel Menzel and Tom Lonergan.

But there were a few unsung heroes as well.

James Parsons, who kicked two vital goals in the final quarter, was probably the most notable of them.

He no doubt cracked a smile when he saw the pump-up he recieved from Dangerfield on social media.

And his performance capped off a great week for him after he signed a new three-year contract with the club on Thursday.

Now for the reality check.

Taking on an undermanned Fremantle side at Simonds Stadium is one thing.

But what about the challenge that awaits the Cats on Saturday night: premiership favourite Greater Western Sydney on its home deck at Spotless Stadium.

On top of that, Geelong will definitely be without Stewart and will most likely be missing Joel Selwood.

So what's the key to the Cats matching it with the Giants?
