Geelong premiership ruckman Brad Ottens has one vivid memory which stands out above the others from grand final day 2007.

At three quarter time, with a 90-point lead in the Cats’ favour, Geelong’s longstanding premiership drought looked all but over with 20 minutes and time on to play.

Speaking to Krock Football as part of Thursday night’s 10-year reunion celebrations, Ottens joked there was one player who, with one eye on the scoreboard, was more than happy to call the game then and there.

“A lot of people ask when was the game won and all those sorts of things and I couldn’t really put a finger on that,” Ottens said.

“But I remember at three quarter time, Scarlo [Matthew Scarlett] saying ‘what’s the record margin? Are we a chance to beat the record margin?’ … there was a bit of a giggle [from the group].”

“That’s the one thing, [the one thing] that I remember out of the day. That third quarter we’d just got a hold of them in the end.”

It’s said that Steve Johnson had even predicted his own Norm Smith medal during the final change. Though while no one will ever forget the feats of individuals that one day in September, Ottens says it’s opportunity to be together as a group once more which is most special now.

“Johnno’s game gets better and better each year [and] Moons [Cameron Mooney] kicked his five but I think we all get a bit carried away with ourselves these days because it’s been so long,” Ottens laughed.

“We all started having kids and life sends you all in different directions. That’s why nights like this are so great – we get together and we see each other as a group, which doesn’t happen a huge amount.”

“We spent so much time together back then and then, as we all sort of go our separate ways, it’s nice to just get back together.”
