Cats chief executive Brian Cook says the club will continue to push for an AFL Women’s team as soon as next year.

Geelong was informed by the AFL last year the region lacked the required talent to compete at the highest level of women’s football, and subsequently sat the inaugural season of AFLW on the sidelines.

But as the Cats prepare to launch their first ever VFL Women’s side on Saturday in a historic moment for the club, Cook believes Geelong is ticking every box to enter in the top-tier in 2018.

“We’re ready, we’ve got everything that the AFL requires,” Cook told the Geelong Advertiser.

“We have a team, highly talented players, have the facilities, we have the coaches and the support staff. It’s not as though we need to develop a team for a year or two.”

“We need to have an AFL team in the women’s competition.”

The Cats’ VFLW team boasts an array of talent, including a variety of AFLW players and athletes from sports such as basketball and netball, and will play its first-ever match on Saturday against Box Hill from 2pm at Simonds Stadium.
