Geelong captain Joel Selwood says it’s no fluke his side remains undefeated after five rounds of the home and away season.

The Cats put in their most complete performance of the year with an impressive 38-point win over St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, blowing the game open with an eight-goal final term to move to 5-0 and second position on the ladder.

Previous wins against Fremantle, North Melbourne, Melbourne and Hawthorn featured inconsistencies from one quarter to the next, but Selwood has told SEN Breakfast the Cats deserve to be considered a good side.

“I don’t read it [the form] as a fluke. You’ve got to be a good side to be able to do it and I think that we are that,” told Garry, Tim & Hamish on Monday morning.

“We’ve got areas that we need to improve on. We’ve flipped the side a little bit early in the year, [we’ve] probably played 30 guys already – which is going to be important come late in the year.

“We’re just still working out how to play our best footy and to do it for 120 minutes.”

Last season showed the Cats were vulnerable when opposition clubs gained momentum – losses to Collingwood and Sydney being set up in the first term when both teams turned one or two quick goals into five and six.

In Geelong’s most recent win, however, the Cats were able to stop the bleeding as St Kilda had the game on their terms in the third quarter, and it’s this which is most pleasing for Selwood.

“The probably more positive thing this year than last year is that when sides have got momentum, they haven’t kicked a big amount of goals to our none. We’ve actually been able to stop their momentum a bit quicker than what we have in the past.

“At the moment, the boys have just got great belief in what they’re doing. They’re running out games well.

“We’ve got a group of guys who have played 50 games together now, which is important and slowly building on being a mature side.”

Selwood himself was nothing short of inspirational, collecting 15 of his 43 disposals in the third term and kicking a much-needed goal against the run of play.

But when asked about his captain’s performance, he was straight to the point:

“It’s just about doing what needs to be done.”
