George Horlin-Smith and Nakia Cockatoo are very much in the mix to play this weekend, whether that be in the VFL or AFL.

Both players have battled thumb fractures in recent weeks, but they trained strongly at Simonds Stadium on Tuesday.

Horlin-Smith then underwent minor surgery on Thursday to "have a wire taken out", as Cats physio Mark Young explained on the latest episode of the GMHBA Health Report.

"[George is] going well," Young said. "He's running, protecting that thumb that he broke that week.

"He'll be a test and potentially play this week."

Cockatoo hasn't played since pulling up sore after the Cats' win over Fremantle in round one.

"He's also going well. He trained with a protective guard [on Wednesday]," Young said.

"He'll do more training over the weekend and he'll come into the frame for selection."
