Cats skipper Joel Selwood says he will accept all consequences and “own” his mistake after losing his licence as a result of speeding.

The 28-year-old was pulled over by police last week when travelling 127km/h in a 100km/h zone as he returned from Warrnambool following the Cats' community camp.

Selwood will now lose his licence for a month.

“If you’re speeding you deserve the consequences that come with it. I take full ownership for it and that’s that,” Selwood told the Geelong Advertiser.

“I’m remorseful for what I’ve done, I made a bad decision, I made a mistake and I’ve got to get better from it.

“It was a casual drive and it (the speed) just got away from me. In the community I see myself as a leader and I want to make sure we are on our way to (having a road toll of) zero, just like the TAC’s messaging.”

Aside from losing his licence, a decision is yet to be made from the Cats as to whether Selwood will face further repercussions.

“I haven’t spoken to my leaders but that will be arranged through the week,” Selwood said.

“It’s hard to tell [if I will get any extra punishment from the club yet].

“We do constant education in here with the TAC and through the AFLPA. We do those yearly because we think it’s really important, we probably do more than any one I know.”

“It’s just about making sure I take responsibility when I’m in the drivers seat, that I’m the boss of the car.”
