The Cats' VFL Women's team is ramping up its training ahead of its first practice game in early April.

Head coach Paul Hood and fitness coach Monica Kelly have been overseeing a program catering for a squad that features players from all kinds of sporting backgrounds.

"Just to the point now where we're about to refine our squad, so it's getting a bit competitive and the girls are working really hard," Hood told Cats Media prior to a training session at Geelong College on Thursday evening.

"Most of the girls have got an elite background in another sport and they're bringing [knowledge to footy from their previous sports].

"Defence we're learning from basketball and running patterns from netball.

"But, right now, it's just a lot of hard work."
