Geelong midfielder Cory Gregson underwent surgery on Wednesday on the navicular stress fracture in his foot.

Initially surgery was not thought to be required, but after further consultation with specialists, surgery to insert screws was decided as the best way forward to decrease the risk of reoccurrence.

"We want to do everything possible to avoid a recurrence of this injury, therefore surgery was decided as the best option for Cory," Geelong’s General Manager of Football, Steve Hocking, said.

"All went well yesterday and Cory will begin a rehab program in the coming weeks with the aim to have him return to training early next year."
