Geelong captain Joel Selwood has reminded the football world exactly why he is one of the game’s most feared and respected leaders with an inspirational final quarter against Greater Wester Sydney.

After a fortnight of successive shock defeats and a lean vein of form by his own lofty standards, Selwood and the Cats found themselves narrowly in front of the Giants by two points as the siren signalled to start the fourth term.

At that point, the three-time premiership star had 17 disposals to his name.

But with the game on the line and the chance of a third straight defeat a real possibility, Selwood exploded in the last quarter for 12 touches (nine contested) at 75% efficiency, four tackles, three clearances, three frees for, three inside 50s, one goal assist and a clutch goal of his own to arguably drag his side across the line.

“His [Selwood’s] comment was that “Well, I needed to do something because I started poorly,” senior coach Chris Scott said of his conversation with his skipper after the game.

“I didn’t think he started poorly, but he was better towards the end than he was at the start.”

Regardless of whether one agrees with Selwood’s own assessment, there’s no doubt that “something” he did across the final quarter went a long way to winning the four points for his side.
