What an opening round of AFL Fantasy! What an opening round for the official geelongcats.com.au league!

Round one had everything you could have hoped for – upsets, close ones, blowouts and lockout drama.

The competition’s headline act moved to 1-0 as Tom Hawkins’ Team Tommahawk posted 1879 to easily account for the Darcy Lang coached Clubber Lang on 1653.

Unfortunately for Darcy, this was the second lowest score for the round and he’ll have his work cut out for him if he wants to avoid being a cellar dweller in 2016. But hey, at least Darc sealed the game for the Cats with three last quarter goals in the real stuff!

Jackson Thurlow and Mitch Duncan were on track for a thriller in their matchup, but come round’s end it was a 179-point blowout in favour of THURLS THUMPERS.

Jacko’s monster score of 2145 was easily the highest of the round, largely thanks to the inspired choice of Gary Ablett (134) as captain and some consistent performances across the park – whereas Mitch will be disappointed to have slapped the ‘C’ on Dustin Martin (75).

Nevertheless, a 1966 on debut shows the Duncaroos will definitely have the scoring to match it with the big boys if that all-important captain choice goes in their favour.

Elsewhere, Channel Seven’s Sean Sowerby scored one back for Media Street with a nice 77-point win over Daniel Menzel.

As seems to be the trend of this week’s winning sides, the Port Phillip Prawns went with Gary Ablett as captain and were rewarded handsomely, whilst Boyz against Menz would have been home and hosed had their captain – the rampaging Dan Hannebery – not sat out the final quarter on Saturday night.

And in what was certainly the upset of the round, the Warnie-led Warne Dawgs were overthrown to the tune of 89 points by Cats Media’s own Grant Kurzman and his Lara Larks FC.

Big scores to Heath Shaw (109), Kade Simpson (118) and Leigh Montagna (112) did sizable damage for the Larks, along with (you guessed it!) Gary Ablett as captain.

The Warne Dawgs were another team bitten by the Hannebery bug and paid the price – though not as much as we here at Cats Media who will now hear about Grant’s win for the rest of the week... and potentially the rest of time. God help us.
